PhotoTherapy in Calgary

When words aren’t enough, images can speak volumes

Available in-person in Calgary and virtually across Alberta.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to explain how you feel. You may know that something is bothering you but struggle to put it into words. Or perhaps talking directly about a difficult experience feels uncomfortable or overwhelming.

PhotoTherapy offers a different way to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Photographs can become a starting point for conversation, helping you notice connections, memories, and emotions that may be harder to access through words alone.

You don't need to be a photographer or have any artistic experience. The focus isn't on taking the perfect picture - it's on what the image means to you.

Photography Therapy: A Different Way to Explore Your Experiences

PhotoTherapy doesn't replace conversation. Instead, photographs can give us another place to begin.

Sometimes, looking at an image makes it easier to talk about something indirectly before approaching it more directly. An image can also help you notice details, emotions, or patterns that you hadn't thought about before.

Together, we'll explore what the images mean to you. There are no right interpretations and no pressure to create something artistic or meaningful for anyone else.

We'll use the process in a way that fi ts your needs, your comfort level, and what you would like to explore in therapy.

How Can PhotoTherapy Help You?

Sometimes a photograph can bring something to the surface that is difficult to explain in words. An image might remind you of a person, place, relationship, or moment. It may bring up a memory, represent a feeling, or help you express something that is hard to put into words.

In therapy, photographs can be used as a starting point to explore what matters to you and better understand your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Depending on what you’re working through, PhotoTherapy may help you:

  • Explore thoughts and feelings that are difficult to put into words

  • Reflect on personal experiences and memories that still affect you

  • Better understand your emotions, reactions, and patterns

  • Look at familiar situations or relationships from a different perspective

  • Explore important relationships and life experiences

  • Develop greater self-awareness and understanding

The photographs may be ones you’ve taken yourself, images that already have meaning for you or pictures selected as part of the therapeutic process. The focus is always on your experience and what the image means to you. There is no right or wrong way to interpret a photograph, and you don’t need any photography or creative skills to take part.

REGISTERED PROVISIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST | CANADIAN CERTIFIED COUNSELLOR

Hi, I’m Lara.

Meet Lara, Experienced PhotoTherapist in Calgary

I work with people who are looking for a different way to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences — especially when finding the right words doesn't always come easily. Sometimes you know exactly what you want to talk about. Other times, you may simply feel that something is difficult to explain or that you'd like to look at an experience from a different perspective. PhotoTherapy can offer another way to begin that conversation.

My approach is practical, supportive and tailored to you. We can use photographs as a starting point to explore emotions, memories, relationships, and experiences in a way that feels natural and comfortable. My background has taken me through different work environments, including photography, hospitals, and now counselling.

My experience with photography has also shaped the way I understand the power of images and the different ways they can help us express what is difficult to put into words.

Whether you're looking to explore something specific, understand yourself better, or simply try a different approach to therapy, we can start there.

I'm glad you're here.
