Stress and Burnout: What’s the Difference?
Stress and burnout can feel very similar, but they’re not the same.
Stress is usually a response to specific challenges or demands. You may feel overwhelmed, tired, irritable or have trouble sleeping. But even when things feel difficult, you can often still find the energy and motivation to keep going. With some rest, support and healthy coping strategies, stress can often ease and your sense of balance can return.
Knowing the difference matters. It can help you understand what you need instead of simply pushing through. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Talking with someone you trust (or seeking professional support) can be the first step toward feeling better and finding your balance again.
Burnout goes deeper. It develops when stress continues for too long without enough time or support to recover. You may feel physically and emotionally exhausted, disconnected, unmotivated or like you simply have nothing left to give. Taking a short break may help temporarily, but recovering from burnout often requires bigger changes in your workload, routines, boundaries or environment.
Is This How You Feel? How Stress and Burnout Affect You
Have you been experiencing symptoms similar to those?
If so, you may be struggling with stress and burnout:
Constantly overwhelmed, even by small things.
Tired, but find it hard to truly rest or switch off.
Stressed, irritable, or emotionally drained.
Lost the motivation and energy you once had.
You feel like you’re always giving, with very little left for yourself.
Even a break doesn’t seem enough to help you feel recharged.
You know something needs to change, but you’re not sure where to start.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And I’m here to support you along the way!
How Can Stress & Burnout Therapy Help You?
When stress or burnout starts to take over, it can be difficult to know where to begin. You may feel overwhelmed or exhausted. Burnout therapy offers a safe and supportive space where you can pause, reflect, and better understand what is happening beneath the surface.
Together, we can explore the situations, patterns and pressures that may be contributing to your stress. We’ll work at a pace that feels right for you, using practical tools and evidence-informed approaches to help you better understand your reactions and respond to challenges in healthier ways.
Our work may include mindfulness, cognitive-behavioural (CBT) strategies and a holistic approach tailored to your individual needs.
You don’t have to have everything figured out before reaching out. You can come as you are and I’ll take it from here!
Our Effective Approaches to Stress & Burnout Therapy
Mindfulness for stress & burnout
Mindfulness can help you become more aware of your thoughts, emotions and physical sensations without feeling like you have to immediately react to them. Together, we can use simple mindfulness practices to help you create space between what you’re experiencing and how you respond. Over time, this can support greater calm, emotional balance and a stronger ability to cope with everyday pressures.
CBT for stress & burnout
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you recognize these patterns and understand how your thoughts, emotions and behaviours may be contributing to overwhelm.
Together, we can explore more balanced ways of thinking, strengthen coping strategies and identify practical changes that support your well-being.
CBT can also help you develop healthier boundaries and respond to stressful situations with greater confidence and flexibility.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP can be helpful when stress and burnout are tied to anxiety, avoidance or feeling like you need to have everything under control. It helps you gradually face situations or feelings that make you uncomfortable, while learning new ways to respond instead of avoiding them or trying to make them go away.
We take this work one step at a time and tailor it to you. Together, we focus on building confidence in handling uncertainty, difficult feelings and everyday situations with less stress and worry.
Relational Life Therapy (RLT)
Relationships can have a big impact on how we feel day to day. RLT helps you look at the patterns you bring into your relationships and how they may be connected to stress or burnout. It can be useful for individuals and couples, whether the challenges are showing up at home, at work or in both. Together, we explore communication, boundaries and relationship habits to help you create healthier, more balanced ways of relating to others.
REGISTERED PROVISIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST | CANADIAN CERTIFIED COUNSELLOR
Hi, I’m Lara.
Meet Lara, Your Stress & Burnout Therapist in Calgary
I work with people who have been carrying a lot for a long time - at work, at home or both. Sometimes you can keep going for quite a while before you notice how much it's taking out of you. You may still be meeting your responsibilities and getting things done, while feeling increasingly tired, overwhelmed or disconnected from yourself.
My own path has taken me through different work environments - from more than 20 years as a professional photographer, to working as a patient coordinator with AHS and now into counselling. These experiences have shaped the way I understand stress, responsibility and the many demands that can come with work and everyday life.
They've also taught me how important it is to look at the whole picture. What you're experiencing doesn't happen in isolation and therapy should take your actual life and circumstances into account.
My goal is to offer a space where you can slow down, make sense of what's been happening, and find practical ways to feel more balanced and supported.
I'm glad you're here.
