Parenting a Gifted Child Can Be Wonderful but Also Really Challenging

Parenting a gifted child can come with moments of incredible joy. You may be amazed by the way your child thinks, the questions they ask, their creativity, curiosity or ability to see things from a completely different perspective.

And at the same time, it can be exhausting.

You may be raising a child who feels things deeply, notices everything, asks questions you weren't prepared to answer or becomes frustrated when the world doesn't work the way they think it should.

You can love your child deeply and find parenting them difficult sometimes. Both can be true. If you're feeling overwhelmed or wondering whether you're doing enough, you're not alone. Understanding your child's giftedness can be an important fi rst step toward making everyday life feel a little more manageable for both of you.

What Does “Gifted” Really Mean?

Giftedness is about much more than being smart, getting good grades or learning quickly.

Every gifted child is different, but many experience the world with a level of intensity, curiosity or depth that can set them apart from their peers. They may make connections quickly, become deeply absorbed in their interests, notice details others miss or think about complex ideas from an early age.

One important part of giftedness is asynchronous development . This means that different areas of a child's development may progress at different speeds.

For example, your child may have the vocabulary or reasoning skills of an older child while still having the emotional regulation skills expected for their actual age. They might understand a complicated situation but still struggle to manage the feelings it brings up.

This doesn't mean something is wrong. It simply means that being intellectually advanced doesn't mean a child is emotionally older, more independent or able to cope with every challenge that comes their way.

How Might a Gifted Child Feel?

Not every gifted child will experience these challenges, but some may:

  • Feel emotions very intensely

  • Become overwhelmed by noise, change, conflict or other sensory experiences

  • Worry deeply about fairness, the world or things that seem unusually big for their age

  • Feel frustrated when they can't do something as well as they imagined

  • Avoid trying new things because they are afraid of making mistakes

  • Put a great deal of pressure on themselves

  • Feel bored or disconnected at school

  • Become overwhelmed when their expectations of themselves are difficult to meet

Sometimes these experiences are visible. Sometimes they show up as tears, frustration, arguments, withdrawal or refusing to participate. And sometimes, a child who appears confident and capable on the outside may be struggling quietly on the inside.

The goal is to help them better understand themselves and develop ways to navigate the challenges that can come with experiencing the world so deeply. And this is where my role begins.

How Can Therapy for Parents of Gifted Children Help?

My role is to provide you with a space to step back from the day-to-day challenges and better understand both your child and yourself. Together, we can explore the patterns, situations and pressures that may be contributing to stress in your family. We can look at what is happening beneath the difficult moments and find practical ways to respond.

Therapy will help you:

  • Better understand your child's needs

  • Make sense of intense emotions and challenging behaviours

  • Better understand your child's needs

  • Develop practical strategies for supporting emotional regulation

  • Set boundaries that feel both clear and compassionate

  • Navigate challenges at home, school, or within family relationships

  • Make space for your own needs and wellbeing

My support will help you better understand what is happening, feel less alone in it and find an approach that works for your child and for your family. You Don't Have to Figure It All Out on Your Own!

Parenting a gifted child can be complex. But with greater understanding and the right support, it can feel lighter and more manageable. If you're feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or simply ready to better understand your child and your family dynamic, parenting therapy can be a place to start. You don't need to have all the answers before reaching out. We can begin with where you are.

Hi, I’m Lara.

Meet Lara, Therapist for Parents of Gifted Kids in Calgary

If you're raising a child who is gifted, intense, or wonderfully complicated, I’m here for you and not just as a therapist, but as a parent who has lived exactly that.

I built this practice for the parents who are doing everything right and still feel like they're barely holding on. The ones who love their child fiercely and are quietly exhausted by it.

I've spent most of my life trying to understand people - first through a camera lens, then in hospital corridors and now in a therapy room. Each chapter taught me something different about what it means to truly see someone.

That's who I'm here for. And I'm glad you're here.
